Welcome To The Derwent Racing Team

The Derwent Racing Team is one of two competing teams that have been set up by the Tasmanian Racing Board as part of their charter to foster community interest in racing.

The teams - Derwent and Tamar named after the main rivers in the state's South and North and are based around horses trained in each region.

Unlike football and other team sports, racing has no inter-team competition and individual horses have a limited number of owners.

Hence the passion to become a keen racegoer is limited to when your own horse is racing.

The Racing Teams are composed of leading trainers from each region who nominate their best horses to be part of the team for the season. The Derwent Racing Team trainers are Gary White and Jason Clifford.

The horses may not always compete directly head to head, but as they progress through the season they will pick up points for each win and place.

Extra bonuses will be awarded for stakes wins and success in interstate raids.

Members of the public are able to become a member of their selected team. Upon joining you will receive a complimentary package and during the year there will be many opportunities for members to see their horses race, at trackwork and other social functions.

Team trainers will share information about the horse's work with Team Members so over the year they will get to know each of "their" horses, share in their success and worry about their failures.

The two Racing Teams are intended to be a continuing project with a new set of horses introduced each season as well as an interchange bench to replace those which retire, so that each team can compete with 15 players on the field.

How Tempest Tost Got Her Name
Sunday, 11 January 2009

Derwent Racing Team's star filly, Tempest Tost gets her name from a poem composed in honour of the Statue of Liberty, which was donated to the people of America by France in 1884.

Tempest Tost's owner Geoff Harper got the idea for her name from a plaque on the base of the statue because she was by the stallion Statue Of Liberty.

The plaque contains the last few lines from the poem which is reproduced in full below.

"The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles.
From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
""Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!"" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
