Talented filly Tempest Tost will be the
toast of Tasmania if she can give the Apple Isle and trainer Gary White
a breakthrough win in the $1 million Magic Millions Trophy at the Gold
Coast. No Tasmanian galloper has ever raced at the Magic Millions
carnival but White is confident his grey filly can do his home State
proud in Saturday's 1400-metre feature. Tempest Tost is raced by
Geoff Harper, the former chairman of the now-dissolved Tasmanian
Thoroughbred Racing Council under his Seahorse Management P/L banner. He paid $72,500 for the filly at the 2007 Adelaide Magic Millions yearling sale. Tempest
Tost is out of Lady Violet, making her a half-sister to 1997 Salinger
Stakes winner Notoire and the stakes-placed Tullamarine. A
daughter of Statue Of Liberty, Tempest Tost scored her only Tasmanian
win at Hobart in July last year before she crossed Bass Strait to score
at Caulfield last August. Tempest Tost led all the way to win
over 1000 metres on a heavy track when she resumed at Flemington on
December 13 before going down in a tight finish to Lodore Falls over
1200 metres at Moonee Valley on December 27. The filly arrived safely on the Gold Coast on Tuesday but with a query surrounding her fitness. She suffered a minor knee problem when she was hurt in her Caulfield victory last year. "She came off the fence that day and stumbled on her knee," White said. However,
White believes Tempest Tost has fully recovered thanks to expensive
treatment where blood is taken from around the knee joint and later
injected back to protect cartilage. White has been training for almost 30 years and is looking forward to his Magic Millions challenge. Based
at Brighton near Hobart, White has been one of Tasmania's most
successful trainers with three Launceston Cup wins and two Hobart Cup
triumphs. White often takes horses to Melbourne but rarely ventures to any other State. His last trip away was for the Sydney Cup in 1986 when he had no luck with Scruples, who finished 14th to Marooned. White is overlooking Tempest Tost's recent defeat when the filly drew the rails alley. "We had to make use of the barrier last time and she was taken on in front a long way from home," he said. "She was still very impressive considering the soft run the leader got." Tempest Tost is stabled with White's friends Kelly and Gary Doherty on the Gold Coast. White
is not worried with Tempest Tost's barrier 11 but he does have some
concerns about her handling the right handed direction. "She's
the consummate professional. She worked well going right handed on
Thursday at the Gold Coast and Gary Doughty was very pleased," he said. "She's got incredible gate speed and I'm sure 1400 metres won't worry her but it's her first time going right handed."
